From Praise to Rage: Conservative Reaction to Jeffrey Epstein File Disclosure is Mixed.
Right-leaning reactions to the partial release of files involving the Epstein case have been mixed, with certain supporters of the previous administration highlighting the noticeable appearance of Bill Clinton and additional Democratic figures in photographs, while others expressed frustration over how heavy redactions portray Donald Trump and Republicans in a unfavorable light.
Justice Department Justifies Censorship with Strong Rhetoric
Justice Department officials defended the redactions with fervent exaggerated language. “Never in U.S. history has a President or the Department of Justice been so open with the American people about such a delicate legal matter,” declared a senior Justice official Todd Blanche, who issued a six-page memo describing the redaction process.
Questions Prompted by Redactions
While Trump's identity and image are visible in some of the documents, the widespread redactions prompt significant concerns about the information may be hidden behind them. A number of conservative lawmakers swiftly called for greater openness.
“The public are furious and disengaging,” wrote Georgia Congresswoman Marjorie Taylor Greene.
Via a social media post, GOP Congressman Thomas Massie said the redactions violate the law, and implied that a future Congress may move to impeach the Attorney General, Pam Bondi, for that violation. “Regrettably, today’s file dump grossly does not adhere to both the spirit and the letter of the law,” he continued.
Some Rightwing Figures Swing In Support of the Disclosure
However, a segment of rightwing commentators and former President loyalists came out strongly in support of the Justice Department's actions.
The disclosed materials—originating from a justice department run by close Trump associate Pam Bondi—contains scores of pages that are completely redacted, and numerous of the individuals depicted in photographs have their identities obscured.
But a few are not, including high-profile individuals like Clinton, entertainer Michael Jackson, and scholar Noam Chomsky. The inclusion of the former president, in particular, enabled some conservative figures to go on the attack.
“It’s quite ironic how the Democrats falsely claimed Donald Trump of being a pedophile, only for the administration's Justice Department to release documents that show Bill Clinton skinny dipping with a convicted sex offender,” stated conservative activist Laura Loomer.
“Recently released documents show Bill Clinton without a shirt in a jacuzzi with a female that is not his spouse Hillary Clinton,” wrote attorney Rogan O’Handley. “There’s only one explanation Epstein would photograph a Commander-in-Chief with a young woman in a jacuzzi: Blackmail.”
Clinton Campaign Releases Statement
Bill Clinton has consistently stated he knew of zero criminal activity by Epstein and has not been accused to have engaged in any misconduct. “The administration hasn’t been hiding these files for months only to release them at the last minute on a weekend to shield Bill Clinton,” his spokesperson Angel Ureña stated in a statement.
“This is about protecting themselves from future revelations, or from what they’ll try and hide forever. Therefore they can release as many low-quality decades-old photos as they desire, but this isn’t about Bill Clinton. Not previously, never will be,” the statement added.
Broader Conservative Comment Seems Subdued
Nonetheless, overall comment on the political right was relatively subdued after the release, especially when compared with the vociferous calls for action that came before the congressional vote to pass a bill requiring the documents' release.
Loomer, who recently accepted press credentials at the Defense Department, had been one of the loudest proponents for a complete release. Earlier this year, she criticized the Justice Department generally and Bondi in particular after a group of conservative influencers were given hard-copy binders of files that included little previously unseen information.
